Common DIY Fencing Mistakes

Many people think they’ll save money by installing their own fence. But often times, this leads to expensive mistakes that can end up costing you more than if you were to just hire a fence installation contractor in the first place. Here are some pitfalls to avoid.

1.    Not Knowing Legal Restrictions

Failure to be aware of local laws and regulations, as well as property boundaries and zoning laws, can result in some very costly assumptions. Before adding a fence to your residential property, there are many legal factors and local ordinances regarding fence types, sizes, styles, heights and colors that you have to think about. Get your project approved by your local zoning commission, or if you live in a neighborhood with a homeowner’s association, get their approval first.

Verify your property lines so you’re not encroaching onto your neighbors’ property, and have an assessment done by a licensed surveyor. You don’t want to have to move the fence or face a big fine after installing an unapproved or ill-placed fence.

2.    Taking Incorrect Measurements

Many homeowners are hasty in their measurements, if they take them at all. Make sure you measure your project area in both size and height at least twice to ensure they are accurate. Those measurements will dictate how much material you need, and you don’t want to under or over estimate. Don’t forget the post holes and custom cuts if applicable.

3.     Failure to Call the Utility Company

Always call your utility company before you start digging. This is the law, plus it’s in your best interest in terms of safety. There could be devastating consequence if you were to hit a pipe, underground wire, or water line by mistake. Before digging those post holes, give a quick call to the utility company in your area. It will save you a lot of headache.

4.     Failure to Secure Fence Posts Properly

You have to set solid, stable posts at least two feet into the ground, anchoring them with gravel or concrete so they can provide enough support for the panels and rails. If you fail to dig deep enough, fence collapse will eventually happen. Give the posts time to set properly before you continue with the rest of the installation so leaning doesn’t occur.

5.    Ignoring Slopes

Lots of yards have a slope – even if you’re not necessarily aware of it. This sloping can affect the end result of your fence project. The most common result of sloping is the presence of large gaps at the bottom of the fence, which looks weird but even more importantly, can allow small pets and children to escape.

6.    Improper Gate Placement

When considering gate placement, take a look at how foot traffic on your property naturally flows. Don’t skimp on the quality of materials at this juncture, as the gate is the focal point of your fence and will get the most wear-and-tear. Make sure there’s enough space at the bottom so the gate can swing open and closed freely.

7.    Use of Low-Quality Materials

Go with higher quality materials for your fence, which will ensure its long lifespan. Low-quality materials can lead to faster degradation and the need for premature replacement.
